Bob Eubanks was simply the best when he hosted The Newlywed Game.
For generations of viewers, the iconic game show tested newly married couples to see just how well they really knew each other — and Bob was the perfect host.
And somehow, even at 88, he still has those golden pipes.
For millions of Americans, Bob Eubanks will always be remembered as the quick-witted host who could turn an ordinary question into a hilarious moment on The Newlywed Game. His personality, timing, and unmistakable sense of humor made the show one of the most entertaining game shows of its era — and honestly, there’s nothing quite like it on television today.
But Eubanks was much more than a beloved game-show host. Long before he became famous for asking newlyweds questions about their marriages, he was already making his mark in the entertainment world.
And one of the most surprising chapters of his story involves one of the biggest bands in music history.
In 1964, Eubanks took a huge financial risk, mortgaging his home for $25,000 to help finance and bring The Beatles to the Hollywood Bowl for their historic concert.
So yes, Bob Eubanks gave us unforgettable Newlywed Game moments — and the word “Whoopee.” But he also played a little-known role in bringing Beatlemania to American soil.
Long before Bob Eubanks became the familiar face asking newlyweds some of television’s most outrageous questions, he was just a young boy growing up in California with big dreams and a love for entertainment.
Born in Flint, Michigan, Eubanks was raised mostly in Pasadena, California, during the 1940s and ’50s. Music was a huge part of his childhood, and he grew up listening to stars like Frank Sinatra and Doc Watson.
But Eubanks wasn’t content to simply watch the stars from a distance.
As a boy, he became a child model, appearing in advertising photo shoots. During one of those shoots, he even met one of his childhood idols, singing cowboy Gene Autry — a moment the young Eubanks would surely never forget.
At home, he soaked up the entertainment of the era, watching classic television programs and quiz shows that would later become surprisingly relevant to his own career.
”I always wanted to be in radio when I was young. I wanted to be a disc jockey. I only had one real job. One time I worked at Lockheed Aircraft for three days. I’m the most unlucky, cynical human being that God ever put on the Earth, and I was supposed to build radar racks for Electra jets for three days. And then the last two, I was supposed to install them, and I’m walking in on the third day and I have no idea what I’m doing. And a guy drops dead in front of me! And I step over his body. I go get my toolbox and I get out of there. And that was the last “real” job I ever had,” Eubanks told Lyndsey Parker in 2025.
After graduating from high school, Eubanks found his way into radio. He quickly became one of California’s popular disc jockeys, putting him right in the middle of the booming Southern California entertainment scene.
And then his career took an unexpected turn.
During the 1960s, Eubanks began promoting concerts and found himself working with some of the biggest names in music. He helped bring The Beatles to the Hollywood Bowl for their famous 1964 and 1965 performances and also promoted The Rolling Stones during the early years of their American tours.
His list of other acts reads like a who’s who of music history; Barry Manilow, The Supremes, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan, Elton John and Merle Haggard were among the artists he promoted.
In other words, by the time Eubanks eventually stepped in front of the cameras as a game-show host, he had already lived quite a story behind the scenes.
”I’ve always been in the business world. I wasn’t necessarily someone who just was mesmerized by them. The Beach Boys, I dealt with a lot, and Stevie Wonder. I played ping-pong with Chuck Berry once and he just whipped my butt. I said, “Where’d you learn to do this?” He’s like, “Man, I just spent seven years in jail. All I did was play ping-pong,”, Eubanks once shared.
In 1966, Eubanks a phone call from game-show producer Chuck Barris with an offer that would completely change his career. Barris wanted the 28-year-old Eubanks to host a brand-new television game show called The Newlywed Game.
Eubanks said yes — and almost immediately, audiences fell in love with him.
When the show premiered on ABC later that year, it became an instant hit. Eubanks brought a youthful, playful energy to daytime television, and he quickly developed a talent for getting newly married couples to reveal things they probably wished they had kept to themselves.
The questions could be awkward, embarrassing and downright hilarious, and Eubanks knew exactly how to keep the contestants talking. The show’s success was so strong that ABC expanded its presence into prime time, where it remained for five years.
His first wife died
For five consecutive seasons, from 1968 through 1973, The Newlywed Game ranked among the top three daytime game shows.
While Bob Eubanks was becoming a familiar face on television, he was also building a busy family life away from the cameras.
In 1969, Eubanks married Irma Barnard of Ann Arbor, a talented artist, avid athlete and ranch forewoman. Together, they raised three children: Trace, who later became a firefighter, Corey, who went on to work as a stuntman, and Theresa.
They bought 20 acres of a working cattle ranch and eventually expanded the property to 26 acres. Life on the ranch gave the family plenty to keep them busy.
They all enjoyed riding and roping, while Eubanks himself spent his free time participating in rodeos. He eventually became a gold card member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
Sadly, Irma died in 2002 following a prolonged illness.
Just two years later, Eubanks would find love again. This time, he fell for Deborah James, a woman 29 years younger than him. Despite their nearly three-decade age gap, the couple married in 2004 and have built a lasting life together.
James, 66, is a former model and actress who later became an event and wedding planner. The couple share a son, Noah, and have spoken openly about the work they put into their relationship before marriage.
They first met while co-hosting a charity event for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Neither was looking for a serious relationship at the time.

“We both had just got out of committed, long relationships, and were not looking for anything serious,” Deborah said
What began with a simple request for help carrying belongings eventually turned into something neither expected.
The pair dated for nearly a decade before marrying. Along the way, they worked through personal challenges and attended therapy both individually and as a couple. James has previously described their relationship as one where they continue to support and encourage each other.
Intimate wedding
“Something was bigger than us both, and 28 years later, he’s still making me laugh, just about different things now.”
Their wedding itself took several attempts. After postponing the ceremony twice following unexpected family deaths, they finally married in an intimate Palm Springs celebration surrounded by just 30 close friends and relatives.
As the years went by, Eubanks began slowing down a little, but he never completely stepped away from the entertainment world. Even as he got older, he continued taking on projects that kept him connected to the television audience that had known him for decades.

In 2013, he toured with America’s Greatest Game Shows: Live on Stage, bringing some of television’s most beloved game shows to audiences across the country.
Two years later, he returned to the game-show world once again, appearing as the host of a couples game on WE tv’s Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars.
Then, in 2023, Eubanks was back where it all began. ABC News announced that he would be featured in The Game Show Show, a four-part documentary exploring eight decades of American game-show history.
